Teaching Methodology at SJIS

SJIS follows Montessori Theory of teaching amalgamating it with modern educational concepts and trends thereby making learning a process to prepare young minds to be able to grasp further education with ease.

Independence

"Never help a child with a task at which he feels he can succeed." – Maria Montessori.
It is always a goal of Montessori education in the classrooms to make the child independent and enable him to do things on his own. This is achieved by giving children enough opportunities. Opportunities to move, to dress themselves, to choose what they want to do. When the children are able to do things for themselves there is an increase in their self belief, self confidence and esteem that they may carry on throughout their life.

Observation

Observation or watching the child is a treat for parents and teachers. We can spend countless hours just watching children and see how they are enjoying themselves, exploring their environment. Observation is also the way adults can learn about what the child’s needs are. For example, if a child starts banging on objects, it means that he has a need for that gross motor activity, so give him a drum. If children are pushing things around the room and they need to walk but can't do it themselves yet, help them or give them a wagon to push. This is how observation can help create harmony, fulfilling the child's current needs. At SJIS teachers play an important role as observers and thus find out their individual capabilities. We plan our learning modules as above mentioned theory and keep making necessary changes in learning modules, when required.

Following the Child

Follow the child, they will show you what they need to do, what they need to develop in themselves and what area they need to be challenged in.

“The aim of the children who persevere in their work with an object is certainly not to “learn”; they are drawn to it by the needs of their inner life, which must be recognized and developed by its means.” – Maria Montessori.

From what we have observed from the actions of the children, we can follow them in what they need to do. If they want to climb, we give them the opportunity to climb in a safe manner. We at SJIS follow the children and give them ample opportunities through ‘trial and error’ method while ensuring safe and secure environment around them.

Correcting the Child

Children make mistakes. They may spill something, drop food unintentionally and so on. If they mispronounce a word, there is no need to correct them directly, but rather say the word correctly. Correcting children may result in them being scared to attempt anything in fear of making another mistake.

We at SJIS teach them the correct way, where we teach them by example and not by pointing out their mistake.

Prepared Environment

"The teacher’s first duty is to watch over the environment, and this takes precedence over all the rest. Its influence is indirect, but unless it is well done there will be no effective and permanent results of any kind, physical, intellectual or spiritual." – Maria Montessori.

The environment has to be ready and beautiful for the children so it invites them to work freely. The prepared environment is important part of learning n teaching at SJIS. The development of the child is mainly dependent on the environment she or he is in, and this environment also includes the parents. Keeping this in mind SJIS comes up with a new concept of “Parents Time with Kids” in School, where parents are free to come, witness and be a part of their child’s learning directly.

Rooms are child sized with activities set up for freedom of movement and are beautifully designed so that children get attracted to the place of learning.

Absorbent Mind

Children simply absorb everything in the environment by experiencing it, being part of it. It is therefore important that the environment set up is good, nice and positive since this is what the child will absorb whether he chooses to or not. The language of the adult is one that a child will easily pick up. Therefore SJIS specially takes care of what a child listens and follows from his/ her teachers. Teachers are well equipped with correct tools of teaching, where most of the learning happens through indirect yet most effective methods. It is for this reason that we don’t say "No" to a child. We do not want them saying "No" to us rudely. Instead, we say "Stop" when we want to tell children that what they are doing is wrong.

A good education system plays a vital role in moulding the life of children and it starts in the early years of childhood. Our mission is to holistically develop the child and channelize his/her potential into creative outlets. We believe that children are potentially divine and we help them to grow freely in a very natural way in secure and welcoming surroundings, drawing out the best in them.

No Bag Concept

SJIS will follow ‘No Bag Concept’, strictly wherein, school shall provide separate locker to each child to keep his/her study material. No student will have to bear the burden of heavy school bags on their shoulders. Minimum homework will be assigned based on the requirement of the classes.

Parents – Child Concept

This unique facility will be made available to all parents desirous of spending quality time with their child. Parents can utilize school resource room and other aids and accessories to interact with their child. They can inform about the timings as per their convenience, however final coordination will be done by the school and same will be intimated to each parent. This facility is not extended to any other relative / friend /grandparents or servants other than parents.

Special Teaching Aids :

Digital classes

The Digital class is a comprehensive solution designed to assist teachers in school in meeting day to day classroom challenges and enhancing a student’s academic performance with simple, practical and meaningful use of technology. SJIS provides digital aids in all the classrooms to provide multi sensory learning.

Resource Room

Resource room is a unique concept at SJIS which along with a small library, has all the required educational toys and aids which help teachers in planning ‘activity based learning’. SJIS tries to make every learning experience a permanent positive impact on students and teachers both. Resource room helps to make use of ‘teaching aids’ a routine habit.

e-Care Facility

This facility provides a gateway and real time information to the parents through website and SMSs. Students’ daily homework and attendance reach to parents within few hours. Parents can keep a watch on their child progress along with the daily activities at school. Each student is allotted an ID whose password is given to the parents through which they can communicate with teachers, coordinators and Principal online.
